Location

Tokyo Metropolitan University is located in the quiet suburb of Hachioji, near Tokyo (about 60 min from Tokyo).

College Life

There are experienced advisors in “Seimei Jimushitsu”, (Office of the Biology Department) who will help Japanese and International students find accomodation, open bank accounts, apply for scholarships, etc. These are the primary advisors who will help you. Please feel free to visit the office for any questions. The office is in Room 231 of Building 8 and is open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.


Housing

There are two dormitories in the university. If you wish to live in dormitories, you can submit an application form to the “Student Office” (“Gakuseika Office or 学生課”) with the help of advisors in the “Seimei Jimushitsu”. Please beware that the number of rooms are limited. Therefore, please also contact “Seimei Jimushitsu” and seek assistance on accommodation. We will help you contact local real estate companies or visit online apartment search websites. In average, the monthly rent around Minami-Osawa Campus is between 50,000JPY and 60,000JPY. Additional information regarding various aspects of your student life is provided in the webpage of the “Student Office/Gakuseika” and the International Office (http://www.gs.tmu.ac.jp/gakuseika/index.html, http://www.ic.tmu.ac.jp/english/index.html). Please feel free to inquire about their contents to the advisors in the “Seimei Jimusitsu”.

Language Support

The “International Office” offers special language classes for international students. Please choose the course that suits the level of your language skill.
The classes are given at the second floor of “International House”. Furthermore, a volunteer group organized by Japanese students “HANDs” is willing to assist international students with their life in Japan.

Medical Care

  • Medical office on campus
  • The main medical office is in Building 7 of Minami-Osawa Campus. We also have a medical office in Building 8/9, in which the faculty of Biology is housed. • If the symptom is not so serious or you do not know which hospital to go, please visit the medical office.

  • Health Care in Japan
  • The Japanese Health care policy provides universal health insurance coverage. All residents of Japan are required by the law to register to health insurance coverage. For the average payment, please see http://www.ic.tmu.ac.jp/english/study_abroad/health_insurance.html. • You will be issued a health insurance card when you have joined the health care system. 70% of the medical fees including medication will be covered by the insurance. Please remember to bring the card whenever you visit a hospital or a pharmacy.

Part Time Job

International students in Japan must apply for the permission to work part time. Basically, working hours are limited to 28 hours a week at the maximum.
Once you are approved, you do need to renew it even if you change your part time job. However, after you extend your visa, you need to renew the permission for part time jobs.

Cafeteria

  • Both are on campus.
    Seikyo Cafeteria Opening Hour: 11:00-19:45, but will change during holidays.
    Tom’s House Opening Hour: 11:00-14:00/17:00-20:00, but will change during holidays.
  • Also,McDonald’s is in front of Minami-Osawa station.

Shopping

There is Ito Yokado, a large supermarket, in front of Minami-Osawa station. At Ito Yokado, You can buy most items such as food, clothing, dishes, futon and etc.

About Minami-Osawa

Minami-Osawa station is about 40 minutes by train from Shinjuku station, which is one of the biggest station in Tokyo, It takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes From Haneda International Airport to Minami-Osawa. Minami-Osawa is one of the towns in Hachioji-shi. Hachioji-shi has steadily developed in the last 30 years, and there are several universities. Hachioji-shi is part of Tokyo, which has many beautiful parks.
