TMU-UOS exchange 2022 : Lab experience
Bounsanong Chouangthavy
Systematic Zoology Laboratory
Work with 4 people

The main objective of this activity was to exchange the research approach between the students of TUM and UOS, and also to understand the international research collaboration in order to improve knowledge of the young generation.

In order to understand more details about the research approach between UOS and TMU sides, the plan was designed to conduct the survey of diversity of arthropod and soil animals in bamboo and natural forest around TMU campus, which aimed to determine which arthropod and soil animals are the most divers and which habitats between bamboo and natural forest support the greatest arthropod and soil animals diversity.
To detect the diversity of arthropod and soil animals, nine pitfall traps were installed, of which three pitfall traps were placed in bamboo forest and six pitfall traps were also placed in natural forest respectively. All pitfall traps were filled with about 50 ml of 75% alcohol and had a cover for rain protection, and the traps were installed on 18th Friday November 2022. The next day (19th Saturday) we held a mini presentation in the meeting room of Systematic Zoology Laboratory to introduce the research topic to each other to exchange ideas and knowledge.
During 21th Monday, we recollected the samples from pitfall traps back to the Systematic Zoology Laboratory for identification. All of the arthropod and soil animals were identified to family level under microscope and preserved with 90% alcohol for future DNA extraction. After all specimens were identified, we then found that arthropods and soil animals predominately prevailed across the natural forest, as compared to the bamboo forest. Finally, we have discussed this interesting point of biodiversity status between TMU and UOS forests in order to conduct the collaboration in the future.

This activity is very successful, we have learned and exchanged the research approach of each student throughout the field and given the presentation between TMU and UOS students, especially, we have learned from each other and improved our skill in terms of international coordination and communication as well as exchanged the research experiences. In addition, even though it was a few days' collection, clear results were found that natural forests are important harbors for arthropods and soil animals as well as other living things.

We all very much enjoyed this activity although it was a short time. It would be good if the exchange program is provided for a few days, in order to allow each activity to be given the presentation to each other.
