実施場所: Systematic Zoology Laboratory & TMU campus

<概要/目的>
Our main focus was to give the UOS sudents that decided to join our Laboratory a deep experience in ecology and systematic zoology that they would enjoy.

<方法/企画としての特徴>
Since the UOS students that joined our lab were from a Nanobiotechnology and cellular biology background we decied to give them a little bit of a field experience as well as show them a little bit of taxonomic methods, which would be a novel experience for them.
For the field survey we decied to set up pitfall traps in the forest at TMU campus grounds inorder to do a soil arthropod survey.
On the first day we showed them how to make the trap using plastic cups and alcohol, and we let them set up traps as well. We noted the GPS locations as well as environmental conditions at trap locations, such as canopy cover and forest type.
In the afternoon Mr. Benitez and Mr. Kaito showed them the procedures involved in insect identification through the use of dissecting microscopes.
On the following day our Lab gave short presentations on our current and previous work and discussed about conservation biology as well, we also got the opportunity to speak with the UOS students about their research.
Since rain was predicted for the next couple of days we decided to set up roofs for the traps we set to prevent water from entering the traps and we showed the method for this to the UOS students as well.
On the last day of the exchange we collected the pitfall traps and together with the UOS students transferred the captured organisms into storage container with fresh 90% alcohol. We did a basic identification of captured arthropods and discussed the reasons for differant diversity at differant locations.

<活動内容/具体的成果>

Overall I believe that the lab experience activiy was quite successful, and we managed to give a new experience to the UOS students. It was also very informative for us to explain our research to students from a differant discipline and get there perspective on the work we do and vice versa.

<感想/課題など(企画力/評価力/自主性等の向上を含む)>

It was very interesting and I believe that we could have maximised our gains with a little bit more time for presentations and discussions. I think that thsi kind of exchange is very informative for both sides.
