Taxonomy, Systematics and Phylogeography of Terrestrial Invertebrates

The Indochina region is a region of high species diversity, endemism, and persistence in various flora and fauna groups. In addition, in the mountainous areas of northern Indochina, the faunas of the Palearctic and the Oriental realms are mixed.
Our research group is working on various taxa of terrestrial invertebrates in Southeast Asia, especially in the Indo-China region, aiming to elucidate local faunas, to update the classification (taxonomic system), and to understand the spatial distribution of taxa and their formation process. We use not only morphological observations and analyses but also phylogenetic analyses for sequence datasets obtained by Sanger sequencing as well as next-generation sequencing.
I have collaborated with researchers affiliated with institutions in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Taiwan, China, and other countries, and have conducted joint research and field surveys. Our research has covered a wide range of invertebrate taxa, including ants, wasps, hemipterans, termites, centipedes, millipedes, symphylans, spiders, pill isopods, and blood-sucking leeches, and the results have been published in numerous papers.

Francesco Ballarin
Research being conducted by Assistant Prof. Francesco Ballarin

My research area of interest is principally focused on the study of the evolutionary and biological processes that shaped the modern distribution of subterranean and soil fauna in Eurasia in relation with climatic and geological events occurred during the Cenozoic Era. In my studies I use spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) as the main model animal of which I study in detail taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography. I am also interested on the study of the ecology and conservation of the invertebrate fauna in caves and the effect of the Global Warming on their communities.
Since 2010 I am member of the International Society of Arachnology and the International Society of Speleology. In the past years I had the occasion to visit numerous caves and survey the subterranean habitats in several different countries in Eurasia (China, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, etc.). Results of these studies have been summarized in several international journals and reported in local and international congresses. One of my works in particular shed new light on evolution of Asian cave spiders highlighting how epigean were forced to adapt to subterranean environment by the rising adverse conditions occurred during the Mid-Miocene Climatic Change (~14 Mya). My current working web involves collaborations with several researchers from international institutes in Europe and Asia. In addition to taxonomy, evolution and diversity of subterranean organisms I am also working in conservation of subterranean environments and the effects of invasive species on endemic cave fauna.

Unveiling the morphology of the Oriental rare monotypic ant genus Opamyrma Yamane, Bui & Eguchi, 2008 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Leptanillinae) and its evolutionary implications, with first descriptions of the male, larva, tentorium, and sting apparatus

The monotypic genus Opamyrma Yamane, Bui & Eguchi, 2008 (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Leptanillinae) is an extremely rare relictual lineage of apparently subterranean ants, so far known only from a few specimens of the worker and queen from Ha Tinh in Vietnam and Hainan in China. The phylogenetic position of the genus had been uncertain until recent molecular phylogenetic studies strongly supported the genus to be the most basal lineage in the cryptic subterranean subfamily Leptanillinae. In the present study, we examine the morphology of the worker, queen, male, and larva of the only species in the genus, Opamyrma hungvuong Yamane, Bui & Eguchi, 2008, based on colonies newly collected from Guangxi in China and Son La in Vietnam, and provide descriptions and illustrations of the male, larva, and some body parts of the worker and queen (including mouthparts, tentorium, and sting apparatus) for the first time. The novel morphological data, particularly from the male, larva, and sting apparatus, support the current phylogenetic position of the genus as the most basal leptanilline lineage. Moreover, we suggest that the loss of lancet valves in the fully functional sting apparatus with accompanying shift of the venom ejecting mechanism may be a non-homoplastic synapomorphy for the Leptanillinae within the Formicidae.

A new amphibious species of the genus Scolopendra Linnaeus, 1758 (Scolopendromorpha, Scolopendridae) from the Ryukyu Archipelago and Taiwan
image

In Japan and Taiwan, five valid species of the genus Scolopendra Linnaeus, 1758 have been described: S. morsitans Linnaeus, 1758, S. subspinipes Leach, 1816, S. mutilans Koch, 1878, S. japonica Koch, 1878, and S. multidens Newport, 1844. Recently, an undetermined species was found in the Ryukyu Archipelago and Taiwan. Using molecular phylogenetic analyses with mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA and nuclear 28S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes as well as conventional morphological examination, we successfully discriminated this sixth species as an independent lineage from S. subspinipes, S. mutilans, and other named congeners from East and Southeast Asia. Therefore, the species was described as S. alcyona Tsukamoto & Shimano, sp. nov. Several situational evidences suggest that this species prefers streamside environments and exhibits amphibious behavior.

Revision of the species-level classification of Vietnamese species of the genus Phintella (Family Salticidae)

Dr. Phung Thi Hong Luong, a researcher at the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources in Vietnam, worked under my supervision as a scholarship phD student supported by Asian Human Resources Fund, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and elucidated the species diversity of the jumping spider genus Phintella in Vietnam. She received his Ph.D. in Science in September 2017.
Jumping spiders, or the family Salticidae, are dominant wandering arachnids in tropical and subtropical regions and are a large presence in terrestrial ecosystems as predators of insects and other terrestrial arthropods. The family is taxonomically diverse, with approximately 6,000 valid species (10% of the total number of known spider species), but its taxonomic system is confusing. Because of the very large differences in shape and coloration (sexual dimorphism) between conspecific male and female adults, conspecific male and females have often been classified as different species or even different genera. That is to say that male-based and female-based classifications coexist, and many synonyms are expected to remain. On the other hand, a large number of undescribed species are expected to exist.
In order to solve this problem, she collected a large number of Phintella specimens from Vietnam, and obtained morphological information from each specimen, such as coloration in fresh conditions, DNA sequences of multiple gene regions, and morphology of male and female copulatory organs, which she used in an integrated manner to accurately discriminate the species and to elucidate the correspondence between males and females. As a result, 22 species were discriminated and identified, including 12 new species, increasing the number of known species in Vietnam by 2.5 times.
